Blanzy Bypass Opens: Egis Mobilized to Enhance Safety on the RCEA
The Road “Centre-Europe Atlantique” (RCEA)in France reaches a new milestone with the opening of the Blanzy bypass. Long dubbed the “road of death,” this section of the RCEA is now a safer and smoother route, serving both road users and the local area.
This new 3-kilometer, 2×2 lane stretch, with a speed limit of 90 km/h, improves traffic conditions for 20,000 vehicles daily, including one-quarter heavy goods vehicles. It forms part of the overall RCEA modernization program, which also includes the Montceau–Génelard section delivered at the end of 2024. The entire Chalon-sur-Saône – Digoin link is now 2×2 lanes, except for the Jeanne Rose roundabout, which provides the connection to Le Creusot.
Under the ownership of DREAL Burgundy, Egis provided comprehensive support: design studies, assistance with tendering, project management and supervision, as well as environmental and acceptance oversight. In coordination with the Interdepartmental Roads Directorate (DIR), the project was carried out in a constrained environment, maintaining traffic while meeting high safety and urban integration standards.
The opening of the bypass improves road safety, reduces noise pollution, and supports local economic attractiveness. This project aligns with the national strategy for infrastructure modernization, alongside other landmark projects led by Egis, such as the Nouvelle Route du Littoral in Réunion.
“With the Blanzy bypass, a once dangerous route has become smooth and safe. It is a collective pride to see this project delivered on time, directly benefiting road users,” said Benoît Masson, Project Director at Egis.
